CHAPTER 9

You know when you wake up and you have this feeling in your gut that you’re supposed to do something today, but for the life of you, you can’t remember what it is? Well, that’s how I woke up this morning.

I had a gnawing in my gut that just wouldn’t go away, but no matter how many times I racked my brain, I couldn’t work out why it was there.

Since moving to Pine Creek, the last three weeks have been ridiculously hectic and I think I just convinced myself that something was amiss because I wasn’t used to going so long without working – yeah, that was it. I was out of sorts. Out of my routine. Not to mention the addition of a sexy as sin cowboy who liked to muddle my brain every time he was close enough for me to smell his delicious scent.

To get my mind off the feeling in my stomach, I’d decided to lay outside in the sun and read a book, which is something I absolutely love to do, but haven’t had a lot of time for in the last few years because I was so busy at my former job.

I must have dozed off during my reading because the sound of my phone ringing wakes me and my book is lying across my face. I lift it off, crease the page and close it before reaching to answer my phone.

“Hello?” I say, sounding slightly groggy.

“Hello, is this Julia?” A formal but friendly sounding woman asks.

“Yes, this is she.”

“It’s Gwendolyn from Dr. Sharpe’s office. I just wanted to confirm your appointment for three pm. Will you still be able to make it?”

Oh shit! The baby doctor appointment. That’s what I was supposed to be doing today. Goddammit.

“Uh, yes,” I quickly glance at my watch. It’s one pm. Shit. “I’ll be there. I may be running a few minutes late though.”

“That’s fine. We’re not too busy this afternoon. See you when you arrive, Julia.”

“See you then, bye.” I hit end and roll up into a sitting position before moving onto all fours before I can climb to my feet. Rushing inside, I fire off a message to Clay. I’m sure he’s busy but, I’m also sure he’d like to at least know that I have an appointment even if he can’t be there.

***

It takes me an hour and fifty minutes to drive the two hour-ish trip to Darwin. Thankfully, there’s a vacant parking space and I drive straight in. Jumping out of my car, I hit the lock button and dash up the stairs leading to Dr. Sharpe’s office.

I stop dead when I reach the top. Clay is standing there, leaning against the one of the poles attached to the half wall cement verandah. His jean-clad ankles are crossed and he’s reading the Darwin Daily newspaper. A maroon and white vertical striped shirt fits snuggly across his chest, accentuating his bulging biceps. I greedily take in his handsome face. It looks like he hasn’t shaved today and he’s got that dark five o’clock shadow thing happening.
